| How long are your classes and what do they contain? Classes are 90 minutes long. Classes consist of warmup exercises, uchikomi (standing throwing drills), newaza uchikomi (groundfighting drills), timed newaza randori (groundfighting sparring with different partners), and timed tachiwaza randori (standing sparring with different partners). What can I expect from my first class? Depending on your experience, you will be paired up with a senior-ranking member who will introduce you to the various components of the class and basic techniques. You will have personal attention for the first several months and you will set your own pace of learning with thoughtful and safe guidance to help you. What are some general etiquette I should follow? Please remove all jewelry and hard objects. This is to prevent injury to you as well as to anyone you may be partnered with during class (please place any valuables in your locker or in your bag - we are not responsible for lost valuables) Please trim your fingernails and toenails short. Please keep you uniform clean. If you train more than 1x/week, it's advisable to own more than 1 uniform. Please assist with setting up the room before and after class. Please only bare feet on the mats and when walking off the mats, please put on flip-flops or other footwear. Do I have to be a member of the McBurney YMCA to take your class? No. The Judo program is a fee-based class with rates for both members and non-members. If you do not belong to the McBurney YMCA you may still sign up for Judo and pay the non-member rate. Please see the Class Schedule page for rates. Do I need a uniform to start class? No, but it would be good to have one. If you'd just like to try a single practice or are unable to purchase a uniform prior to starting class, email us and we will have a loaner uniform (just the top) for your first class. Where do I get the uniform? Any martial arts supply store in New York City should carry judo uniforms. A basic white, single-weave uniform is sufficient for starting judo. Why do you bow in class? Bowing in judo is a gesture of respect, much like a handshake. It is not subservient and it has no religious significance. Will I get to spar? You will spar (randori) in a safe and controlled way with our senior students, usually from the very first day. |
